5-Year-Old Reads 875 Books in Kindergarten – ABC News.
Now here’s a great story to start our Friday Fun day: a Kindergarten student from Lake Charles, LA who has read 875 books this year! When this story first broke on Wednesday, I saved it for a “Friday Fun” posting. Since then it has spread to all the major networks, no doubt, because it is such a breath of fresh air. The reports of this little girl’s reading passion is a real inspiration – to children and to adults! I only wish I had that kind of time in my life now.

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, and for 5-year-old Sophia Moss, that would be true.
Upon looking at her, you’d never believe little Moss, a kindergartner, actually read a total of 875 books this school year. But she did, and her school, T.S. Cooley Elementary Magnet School in Lake Charles, La., is having a hard time keeping up.
“I told Sophia, I said we’re going to have to order more books for T.S. Cooley Library because she’s read so many of them and enjoys so many of them,” school librarian, Mary Lanier, told WAFB in Baton Rouge.
Sophia’s father, Carl Moss, 53, says her love for reading started with Elmo, and quickly grew into a full-fledged obsession for page-turning.
“It started with Elmo, and then we had a DVD of Hooked on Phonics and she just loved it and started watching it at 2-and-a-half years old,” Moss told GoodMorningAmerica.com. “She learned her phonics, so we did sight words, and then we went to the LeapFrog books that we got at Wal-Mart. Short vowels, long vowels, and probably by 3-and-a-half she was sight reading and doing small, small sentences.”
And, by the way, I have a six year old granddaughter that I can match up against this girl. My little birth-mate Abbey Rose shares my love for books and reading, and that thrills my soul! Keep it up, honey! You know grandpa will be in the Thrift stores keeping the grandkids playroom full of good books!
