Penguin Drop Caps: Beautiful Books from A to Z

Penguin Drop Caps: Beautiful Books from A to Z.

Abe Books, besides being a great place to shop for new, used, and antique books, has started to do some nice posts on the world of books and publishing.

Recently, they called attention to the new series of classic titles Penguin is publishing under the title “Penguin Drop Caps.” If you are not familiar with that publishing term, you ought to be, for they are beautiful artistic creations.

Here is the introduction Abe Books wrote up and one of the “drop cap” titles. To see all of them – form A to Z – visit the link above. Looks like something collectible to me. And, of course, some classic reads for all of us. 🙂

Created by Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley and illustrated by type designer Jessica Hische, Penguin Drop Caps is a series of 26 rainbow-hued hardcover editions of literature’s finest treasures. An edition for each letter of the alphabet, the series features authors from A (Jane Austen) to Z (Carlos Ruiz Zafon). You’ll find contemporary literature under I (Kazuo Ishiguro) and K (Sue Monk Kidd), and poetry and prose under W (Walt Whitman). Adventure tales, Victorian romance and science fiction are here too, scattered throughout this eye-catching collection of desirable books.
