20th Anniversary “Abortion” Book by R.C.Sproul

In connection with our previous post, and again, to mark the infamous 38th year anniversary of the Woe v. Wade abortion decision, we feature a book written by Dr.R.C.Sproul on this controversial issue. Its title is Abortion: A Rational Look at an Emotional Issue. It was originally published by NavPress in 1990, but has been re-issued by Reformation Trust (Oct.2010) as a 20th anniversary edition.

In this popular book (“popular” in the literal sense of this word – “for the people”) Sproul tackles this highly controversial and emotional issue using sound Scriptural, legal (natural law), and rational arguments. The three main parts to the book are:

1. “Abortion: The Ethical Dilemma of Our Time”

2. An Analysis of Pro-Abortion and Pro-Choice Arguments”

3. “A Compassionate Response and Strategy”

The book includes appendices on court testimony concerning the beginning of human life and on pro-life resources.

The publisher provides the following summary of the book on their website:

In this book, Dr. R.C. Sproul employs his unique perspective as a highly experienced pastor-theologian and a trained philosopher to provide well-considered and compassionate answers to the difficult questions that attend termination of pregnancy. Dr. Sproul strives for a factual, well-reasoned approach informed by careful biblical scholarship. He considers both sides of this issue in terms of biblical teaching, civil law, and natural law. This edition includes a new foreword by Dr. George Grant and has been updated to reflect developments in the issue. Appendixes provide further background on the issue of when life begins and list sources for pro-life resources.

You will find the book on sale at Ligonier Ministries’ website (www.ligonier.org – follow the links to the Reformation Trust section). The hardcover edition is available for $12.00, while an e-book download is available for $5.00. There you may also watch an interesting video interview of Dr.Sproul on this issue by his son, R.C.Sproul, Jr.

You are encouraged to make use of this valuable resource in battling the forces of abortion’s evil in our day.

What About the Twins? The Deadly Logic of Abortion

Today marks the 38th anniversary of Roe vs Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision to allow women the right to abort their unborn children. Dr. Al Mohler once again has a clear, Christian commentary on this issue, especially as it relates to the recent case of an Australia couple who aborted their twin boys because they wanted a girl. Read his post at the link below. And may we in this country continue to cry out against this great evil – not just because it is a terrible sin against helpless babies – but especially because it is a sin against the holy God!

Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

Deuteronomy 32:39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

Romans 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Here are a few paragraphs from Mohler’s commentary:

The couple in Australia openly admitted aborting their twin boys because they want a daughter. Millions around the world seem outraged by their decision, but having accepted the basic logic of abortion, they are hard-pressed to define when any abortion demanded by a woman might be unjustified and thus illegal.

The Christian revulsion over abortion and the destruction of human life is based in the knowledge that God is the Author of all life and of every life, without exception. Abortion is the business of death, and it is the great wound that runs through the nation’s conscience. These shocking accounts may sear their way into the nation’s collective conscience, but unless the basic logic of abortion rights is overturned, such accounts will erupt again and again.

Once we buy into the logic of abortion, there is no end to the trail of tears. In the case of the Australian couple, a professor of medicine commented that they should be able to select the gender of their baby after aborting the twin boys. “I can’t see how it could possibly hurt anyone,” he said.
